SEC, CFTC, and IRS
Cryptocurrency regulation in the United States is overseen by several federal agencies, including the SEC, CFTC, and IRS. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) also oversees federal banks and fintechs related to cryptocurrencies. If virtual currencies are considered currency, the CFTC will be the primary cryptocurrency regulator. In June, Senators Cynthia Lummis and Kirsten Gillibrand announced legislation aimed at establishing the CFTC as the primary regulator of cryptocurrencies and creating a complete regulatory framework for the currencies.
